Dr Chiara Franceschini

Chiara Franceschini studied art history and history at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, and the European University Institute, Florence.

She joined the Warburg Institute as a Newton International Postdoctoral Fellow in 2009 and is currently Academic Assistant in the Photographic Collection.

She is interested in early modern European history and in Renaissance art and iconography. Her research has focused on religion, images and belief. She is currently preparing a book on visual and conceptual images of the unbaptized in late medieval and early modern Europe and has recently worked on Michelangelo’s Doni tondo and its context. She is planning a research project on the fortune of the Sibyls in the Renaissance and the Reformation. Her previously published articles concern women, courts and religious ideas in sixteenth-century Italy, as well as family chapels and the political use of antiquities in late medieval and early modern Rome.

In the academic year 2010-2011 she contributed to the teaching of Renaissance Iconology in the Warburg Institute's MA in Cultural & Intellectual History.
