Just launched: Aby Warburg Bilderatlas Mnemosyne Virtual Exhibition

Mon 9 November 2020

The COVID-19 virus prevented many people from travelling to Berlin to see the two landmark exhibitions: Aby Warburg: Bilderatlas Mnemosyne - the Original, at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) curated by Roberto Ohrt and Axel Heil in collaboration with the Warburg Institute; and Between Cosmos and Pathos: Berlin Works from Aby Warburg's Mnemosyne Atlas at the Gemäldegalerie. Additionally, with a new lockdown beginning in Germany this week, the exhibition at HKW has closed one month early. Therefore, we are delighted to present a complete virtual tour of these two major exhibitions dedicated to Aby Warburg and his unfinished magnum opus, the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne.

Following the success of these critically acclaimed exhibitions, this digital afterlife allows you to discover them for yourself from wherever you are in the world.

Take our virtual tour to explore in detail the 63 Bilderatlas panels at the HKW exhibition, reconstructed for the first time from Warburg’s original, multi-coloured images that we hold at the Institute.

Our virtual tour also allows you to take a close look at the unprecedented collection of 50 objects pictured in Warburg’s Bilderatlas displayed in the Gemäldegalerie exhibition, gathered from 10 of Berlin’s state museums.

In addition to the displays and wall-text you will find welcome videos from the museum directors and exhibition curators, along with expert commentaries on selected objects.
