At its height the city of Rome had many public libraries, set up by successive emperors. In the provinces, local donors emulated these imperial foundations and added local and personal elements; libraries took their place among the most prominent and splendid public buildings of several Roman towns. This talk will consider the architecture, history, and operation of these Roman public libraries.
Matthew Nicholls is the Senior Tutor at St John’s College, Oxford and a visiting Professor of Classics at the University of Reading. His research and teaching interests include books and libraries in the ancient world, and he regularly teaches on the London Rare Book School at the Institute of English Studies, University of London. He is also interested in the 3D reconstruction of ancient buildings.
