Laura Jacobus (Birkbeck): 'Portrait of the Artist as a ….? Enigmatic self-representations by Giovanni Pisano'

Laura Jacobus will talk about her research into Giovanni Pisano’s self-representation, and his representations of others, especially in the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia (1278). This research is at a relatively early stage, and the paper will be explicit about some of the methodological issues being encountered. These include the need to address the history and reconstruction of the monument, as well as the questions of artistic self-representation which initially gave rise to the research. Similar issues arising from her parallel research on the pulpit in Pisa Cathedral (1311) may also be discussed.

The Work in Progress seminar explores the variety of subjects studied and researched at the Warburg Institute. Papers are given by invited international scholars, research fellows studying at the Institute, and third-year PhD students.
