New publication: Aby Warburg 150: Work, Legacy, Promise
The Warburg Institute proudly announces the release of "Aby Warburg 150: Work, Legacy, Promise," a monumental volume commemorating the 150th anniversary of its founder, Aby Warburg.
Edited by David Freedberg and Claudia Wedepohl, this compilation features insights from prominent scholars such as Horst Bredekamp, Lorraine Daston, Carlo Ginzburg, and many others. Each contributor explores different facets of Warburg’s extensive work and its profound impact on cultural studies.
Aby Warburg, the founder of the Warburg Institute, is regarded as one of the great pioneers of modern cultural studies. This book, arising from a conference held at the Institute in 2016 to mark his 150th birthday, brings together texts by many of the most renowned researchers in the field who have either been studying his work or were influenced by his ideas. The authors shed light on Warburg’s many enterprises, including his theoretical notions and the concepts behind them, his influential terminology, the Bilderatlas Mnemosyne and other projects: they also address his extraordinary impact on the understanding of cultural transmission and the influence of images and texts across time and space. What emerges is the continuing significance of Warburg for our own times. Anyone concerned with Warburg’s legacy or more generally with the many forms of the revivals and survivals of the past in the present or the infinitely complex relationships between images and society will not want to miss this book.
The conference was generously funded by the Max Kohler Stiftung, Martha Pulvermacher Stiftung and Samuel H. Kress Foundation and supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research through the Bilderfahrzeuge project as well as the Warburg-Haus. A selection of recorded talks from the conference can be found here. The volume is published by De Gruyter in cooperation with the Warburg Institute and with the assistance of a grant from the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University, New York.
