Maria Toscano

Associate Fellow

I come from Naples, where I had been educated and had been working for long time. But I have held fellowships elsewhere in Europe as The Paul Mellon Society and INHA (Insitute National d’Histoire de l’Art). I have had also a Frances Yates Fellowship at the Warburg some years ago.

I have a PhD in Archaelogy and History and had been teaching Museography and Museology at Università di Napoli Federico II. From the 2011 to 2021 I had been employed as Fellow Researcher in Modern History at Università di Napoli l’Orientale. I currently live in London with my husband and kids, engaged in various projects with a number of different cultural Institution as European Translator Database (European University Institute), Cres (Centro di Ricerca Epistolari del Settecento, Università di Verona) and ISPF (Istituto per la Storia del Pensiero Filosofico e Scientifico, Centro Nazionale per le Ricerche).

Research Interests

I am an Art Historian and a Museologist, studying XVIII and early XIX Century, but I am rather interested in what it is behind and before the artistic production. As I like to reconstruct cultural exchanges, intellectual entourages and routes of manufacts, images and ideas. In my most relevant works (i.e. Gli Archivi del Mondo, Firenze 2009) I had been defining the concept of antiquarian-naturalists, reconstructing the particular mentality and praxis of this international group of enlightened intellectuals acting in and around Europe (specially in Kingdom of Naples) trying to reconstruct the “History of the world”, as history of the planet and history of mankind altogether.

My interests are currently directed to investigate the common epistemological problems of historiography and natural history which gave the birth to the current concepts of History and Science within the mid XIX century.
