Matthew Harle is The Warburg's Curator of Artistic Programmes, leading the Institute's exhibitions, public programme and the Assetto Fellowships for practitioners in residence.

As a writer, Matthew works on modern and contemporary cultural history. His latest books include The Underground Sea: John Berger on Miners and Strikes (Canongate, 2024) and Black Arsenal (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 2024). As a curator and practitioner, he makes collaborative exhibitions, artist's books and film programmes that present archives and collections at the intersection of art and social history. Most recently, he co-curated a retrospective of public-access television at Raven Row in 2023, People Make Television.

Prior to The Warburg, Matthew was Curator of Public Programmes at the Barbican, where he programmed event seasons, installations, and commissions across the Centre and co-founded the Barbican Archive. 

Matthew has a PhD from Birkbeck, where he taught English Literature before lecturing at a number of universities, art schools and museums. He is a trustee of The Rita Keegan Archive & Studio, originally part of the team that assembled and curated Keegan’s artworks and archive.
