Mapping the influence of Classical Muslim Philosophy on Renaissance Humanism
The Renaissance introduced new ways of conceiving the relationship between God and humankind. Moving beyond medieval God-centred theology, humanist thought propagated virtue and good citizenship. Reflecting the increasing importance of Neoplatonism, philosophers reconfigured the cosmic chain, highlighting humanity’s divine call and unique role within creation. Muslim thinkers argue that the intellect (ʿaql) distinguishes and ennobles humankind above the rest of creation. How did 12th-century Andalusian ideas about humanity's 'cosmic dignity' influence the thought of the Quattrocento? Tracing ideas of the inherent dignity and perfectibility of humankind from the Quran to IbnṬufayl, I will map its influence on Pico della Mirandola.
