Prof. Nerida Newbigin (University of Sydney): 'From "In the beginning" to "World without end": the History of Man’s Salvation in the San Giovanni Procession of 1454'
In 1454, Matteo Palmieri was elected one of the festaiuoli for the feast of San Giovanni, tasked with implementing measures to impose order on the chaos of the religious festival. He subsequently recorded the details of the procession, which combined tradition and innovation into a coherent chronological narrative. Professor Newbigin presents recent research on the procession that forms part of her forthcoming monograph, Making a Play for God: The Sacre Rappresentazioni of Renaissance Florence (Toronto: Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies, forthcoming 2020).
Times of Festival is a lecture series on festivals in Europe and beyond from the perspectives of social history, art history, history of music and literature, and anthropology.
