Aby Warburg Gesammelte Schriften

This series, devoted to Aby Warburg’s written output, is published by De Gruyter for the Humboldt Universität Berlin (Kunst- und Bildgeschichte) in collaboration with the Universität Hamburg (Kunstgeschichtliches Seminar) and the Warburg Institute Archive, which preserves all the documents on which it is based.

All the volumes are published in German, as necessitated by the subject matter. Currently the editors are Ulrich Pfisterer (Zentral­institut für Kunst­geschichte, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München), Horst Bredekamp and Michael Diers (both of the Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte, Humboldt Universität Berlin), Uwe Fleckner (Kunstgeschichtliches Seminar, Universität Hamburg), Michael Thimann (Kunst­­geschicht­­liches Seminar, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) and Claudia Wedepohl (Warburg Institute Archive, Warburg Institute, University of London). Volumes I.1-2, II.1 and VII were co-edited by Kurt W. Forster (Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities), Nicholas Mann (Warburg Institute), Salvatore Settis (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa) and Martin Warnke (Kunst­geschicht­liches Seminar, Universität Hamburg).
 

Aims and scope of the Warburg Studienausgabe

Among the great desiderata of art and cultural historians with an interest in historiography is to have a complete edition of the writings of the Hamburg scholar Aby Warburg (1866-1929), founder of the short-lived but immensely influential Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg, the holdings of which were removed to England in 1933. Warburg’s name lives on in countless research projects worldwide. The aim of the Studienausgabe or study edition of Warburg’s writings is to provide scholars with the comprehensive historical documentation which has been lacking for so long. Each of its volumes includes a commentary offering an introductory characterization of the material as well as a brief explanation of text form and material content of the original sources.

Zu den großen Desiderata der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichtsschreibung dieses Jahrhunderts zählt die vollständige Ausgabe der Gesammelten Schriften des Hamburger Kunsthistorikers und Kulturwissenschaftlers Aby Warburg (1866-1929). Ziel der Studienausgabe ist es, der Öffentlichkeit im Sinne einer wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Dokumentation das publikationsfähige Material des Nachlasses vorzulegen. Die Kommentierung der einzelnen Bände bietet jeweils eine einführende Charakterisierung des Stoffes sowie knapp erläuternde Ausführungen zu Textgestalt und Sachgehalt.
