These two volumes on ‘The Renewal of Pagan Antiquity’, a reprint of their first edition of 1932, comprise all the publications which Warburg sent to print. The spectrum spans from the dissertation on Botticelli (1893), Warburg’s first substantial publication and foundation stone of his research programme on the afterlife of antiquity, to the many occasional writings which Warburg contributed to cultural-political debates throughout his lifetime. These are the very texts which established Warburg as a researcher and later as scholar and founder of a library: essays and articles on art and culture of the Italian Renaissance and the Reformation. Among them are studies on the meaning of portraiture, on cultural exchanges between North and South, on festivals, on the function of astrology as a means of orientation, on printed pamphlets as means of propaganda, and on illuminated calendars. Edited and provided with a commentary in an exemplary fashion by Gertrud Bing, the two volumes have become the programmatic script of a new, problem-oriented art history based on cultural-historical research.

Die beiden Bände umfassen sämtliche von Warburg selbst zum Druck beförderten Publikationen. Das Spektrum schließt die Dissertation über Botticelli (1893) als erste größere Veröffentlichung und Grundstein des Forschungsprogramms zum Nachleben der Antike ebenso ein wie die zahlreichen Gelegenheitsschriften, mit denen Warburg sich in kulturpolitischen Belangen zeitlebens engagiert zu Wort gemeldet hat. Es sind eben diese Schriften, die Warburg als Forscher bekannt gemacht und später als Gelehrten und Bibliotheksgründer berühmt gemacht haben: Aufsätze und Abhandlungen zur Kunst und Kultur der italienischen Renaissance und Reformation, darunter Studien zur Bedeutung des künstlerischen Porträts, zum Kulturaustausch zwischen Nord und Süd, zum Festwesen, zur Orientierungsfunktion der Astrologie, zur Flugblattpropaganda oder Kalenderillustration. Vorbildlich ediert und kommentiert sind die beiden Bände zur Programmschrift einer neuen, problemorientierten und kulturwissenschaftlich fundierten Kunstgeschichte geworden.
