The first phase of the Project involved identifying the different parts of the Paper Museum, gathering primary data for each drawing and inputting the data into a computerised database, obtaining study photographs of the material, photographing and classifying all the watermarks (on both drawings and mount-sheets), and defining the content of the three series and individual volumes. A publisher (Harvey Miller Publishers) was appointed along with Series Editors, authors and readers and scientific consultants (for the Natural History volumes), and a house style and format were devised for the publishing programme.

The second phase was concerned with seeing the volumes through the editorial process to publication, with the final volumes being published in December 2023. The project initially concerned itself solely with the drawings and watercolours to be published in Series A and B. It became increasingly clear, however, that prints were an equally important part of Cassiano’s collection, and around 3,000 prints were identified. Many are unique impressions and bear witness to the systematic organisation characteristic of the Paper Museum. Given the importance of the material and the fact that it had been little researched, it was decided to catalogue the prints in six volumes as a third series within the catalogue raisonné (Series C: The Print Collection of Cassiano dal Pozzo).

A.VII (Ancient Inscriptions, 2002) was the first title to appear under the Royal Collection Trust's imprint; the association with Harvey Miller Publishers (publisher of the first five volumes in the series, 1996–2001: A.I, A.II/1, A.II/2, B.I, B.III) was retained through its parent organisation, Brepols, which remains responsible for the distribution of all the published catalogues.

The final two volumes in Series B (B.IV–V) were published in 2017 and the final three volumes of Series C in 2019. Series A is also now complete, with A.III (Sarcophagi and Other Reliefs, 4 vols) published in 2022 and A.IV (Statues and Busts) in 2023.

Scholarly research was conducted during the first few years of the project’s life with the support of Olivetti, which resulted in an exhibition on the Paper Museum at the British Museum in 1993, and the publication of four collections of studies, the Quaderni Puteani (1989–93, including the exhibition catalogue). As a British Academy Research Project the catalogue raisonné was supported by the British Academy and also benefitted from the patronage of the Accademia dei Lincei and the Académie des Inscriptions et des Belles-Lettres. The Catalogue has been published by Royal Collection Trust with the generous assistance of the Michael Bishop Foundation, and has also received substantial grants from the Getty Grant Program, the Monument Trust and a number of other private and corporate sponsors.

The collaboration with the Warburg Institute was established with the appointment in November 2000 of the Managing Editor, under whose auspices the publication of the series came under the imprint of the Royal Collection Trust. In June 2003 the Project's administrative office moved from the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, to the Warburg Institute, University of London, where the Managing Editor and Project Co-ordinator were based until 2021.

All work and expenditure on the Project (and other Royal Collection Trust academic publishing projects) paused in December 2020, owing to the financial difficulties experienced by the Trust during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was only a year later, thanks to extremely generous renewed funding from the Michael Bishop Foundation, that work was able to resume on the Cassiano Project, allowing it to bring A.III to print in 2022 and completing the series in 2023 with the publication of A.IV.

Drawings and prints from the Paper Museum are featured online in the collections database of the British Museum, the British Library and the Royal Collection. An online version of the catalogue will be developed when resources are available.

A selection of natural history drawings from the Paper Museum was on view at the Queen's Gallery in London and in Edinburgh as part of the exhibition `Amazing Rare Things. The Art of Natural History in the Age of Discovery' (2007-8).
